DPSS Green Lasers - How Green Laser Pointers Work


Green laser pointers are Diode Pumped Solid State lasers or DPSS lasers for short. As DPSS lasers are more complicated and manufactured with more parts, they are more expensive to produce compared to red laser pointers. Below is a basic rundown of how green light is produced from a 808nm laser diode:


Most green laser pointers are powered by two triple A batteries. The batteries are used to power an infrared 808nm wavelength laser diode.
The 808nm infrared light from the laser diode is used to pump a Neodymium doped Yttrium Orthvanadate or Nd:YVO4 crystal which produces light with a wavelength of 1064nm.
The 1064nm wavelength light is then frequency doubled through a Potassium Titanium Oxide Phosphate (KTiOPO4) or KTP crystal. By doubling the laser frequency, you cut the laser wavelength in half producing a 532nm green laser light.
Generally speaking, DPSS green lasers are approximately 20% - 30% efficient. That is, a green DPSS lasers using a 200mW 808nm pump diode should produce a 40mW to 60mW 532nm green laser pointer. However, as there are various lenses and filters (such as an infrared or IR filter) involved in the process of producing green light, the efficiency level is sometimes less. The efficiency depends on the quality of crystals and lenses used in the laser pointer.

Blue DPSS lasers actually use a similar process. The infrared 808 nm laser diode is used to pump a Neodymium Yttrium Vanadium Oxide or Nd:YVO4 crystal. The outcome is an infrared light with a wavelength of 946nm. This 946nm light is then frequency doubled via a Lanthanum Boron Oxide or LBO crystal to produce a 473nm blue laser. As the efficiency for blue lasers is only around 3%-5%, blue laser pointers are relatively weak in power.

Another type of green laser is the Erbium-doped up-conversion laser based on erbium-doped fibers or bulk crystals that can emit around a 550-nanometer good quality laser beam. Frequency-doubled is another technique of creating green laser, in which a frequency doubler is used to convert radiation emitted by a normal laser into green laser. This technique is however very costly and is used only for conducting research work.

For the laser hobbyist who does not deliberately target an aircraft, green laser pointers are safe to use out doors at night. A good precaution when pointing lasers at the sky is to first check the sky to make sure it is free of aircraft and avoid using green laser pointers around airports.

What is the Difference Between Green and Red Lasers?


This most obvious difference between green and red lasers is the wavelength of the beam. Green lasers have a wavelength between 560nm and 490nm with 532nm being the wavelength used for almost every laser. Some green lasers will have a wavelength of 526.5nm and green lasers can be made with other wavelengths such as 515nm, 523.5nm and 543nm. The wavelength for red lasers ranges from 700nm to 630nm with the most common wavelengths being 635nm, 655nm and 671nm.

The process used to create the laser beam in green lasers is very different from the process in red lasers. Red lasers are the simplest and the laser module (the section producing the beam) is just a diode and a lens. Green lasers on the other hand are much more complex and use a diode and a series of crystals and lens in a process called frequency doubling to produce a green beam.

In a red laser, the laser diode gives out red light. There are no commonly available diodes that give out green light so green lasers use a diode that gives out 808nm light. The 808nm is then converted to 1064nm by a crystal. The 1064nm light is then changed again, this time to 532nm.

Now we very carefully heat the diode until the crystal has been visibly changed, its great to have a few diodes laying around to get the hang of which way the green crystal needs to be heated for proper beam propulsion, but make do with what you can. After you have heated and molded the crystal, from a round shape to an oval shape preferably, replace the diode into the laser casing. Return the pointers batteries and end-cap, then turn your green pointer on. Has the beams output power been increased? You will be able to tell immediately if you have drastically increased the output of your green laser, but if the change is slight or you have ruined your laser we may be out of luck.

I'm suggesting if you want a perfectly collimated long lasting green laser pointer, you purchase the higher output powers. These high tech gadgets come with warranties and there is no risk in losing your pointer entirely. But for everyone on a budget who really needs a 50mW green pointer or higher, you can always try (I want to stress the word TRY) to mod your green beam at home. Either way, be careful with all lasers.
