Searchmetrics has conducted a data analysis on what type of content appears most often in Google Universal Search results, as well as which sites are most visible in them. Video and image content wins, as does content hosted on Google’s own properties.

The most revealing data from the study, which the company provided to us and which may appear on its site soon, is that having a video is one of the best ways of showing up in the top results at Google.

The chart below shows up videos are by far the most found results in Google, with image content a distant second:

Searchmetrics also sent the top US based properties that come up under each universal search vertical:

As you can see from this chart, content hosted by Google clearly dominate, ranking tops in four of the five areas:

YouTube is the number one video site that shows up for video resultsGoogle Maps is the number one map site that shows up for map results.Google Product Search is the number one shopping site that shows up for shopping resultsGoogle’s Blogger is the number one image site that shows up for image results.

The top rankings will likely raise rumblings about Google favoring itself, an issue in the anti-trust reviews that it is currently undergoing.

This study defines the universal search results as the sections in the Google search results that read “News for…” or “Shopping results” or “Places for” or “Images for” and so on. The reason Google News is not dominating the news category, Searchmetrics says, is because the URLs in the “News for…” are URLs to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and other news sites. Very rarely does Google have a link to a news article on their own domain name, at least at this point in time.

In terms of local search, Searchmetrics says that the data is drawn from searches related to large metro areas in the United States and would only be valid in those types of areas.

This is one I wrote a while ago; it got a fair amount of attention in the investment community. (Alternative Title: “Index fund investors have found a way to benefit from the stock market. A few patterns emerge:

Strong language works well.It’s more attention-grabbing to attack a person rather than an idea. Even better, one can attack a person by category.The title is critical, and should make the point as emphatically as possible.

If an article makes a blatantly unfair point backed up by superficial data, and no one’s around to read it, does it rile anyone up?

Controversy-stirring linkbait is more dependent on social media than other channels. It’s tough to write something in this genre that ranks well—if the topic is broad enough to matter to most people, it’s probably too broad for one incidental article to be the canonical resource.

But social media is highly and indirectly useful: it’s a great way to get your controversial post distributed to the kinds of people who will write angry, denunciatory, link-heavy responses.

It’s usually best to seed this kind of piece in a few general interest communities. If you’re willing to lose a friend or two, Facebook and Google Plus are a good place to start. Twitter also works, although it’s better to retweet the first person to find your article and post it on their own. And social bookmarking sites are also a great venue.

One thing to avoid: don’t get bogged down in arguing with people in the comments. It’s a big waste of time. One trick you can do, though, is to write a follow-up blog post rounding up responses to the original piece, and responding to them in turn. That’s a lower-reward, lower-risk way to get a few extra links.

A controversy-courting strategy works very well in some verticals, but it falls flat in others. Here are some guidelines:

In pageview-driven sites (i.e. media sites), controversy is a very powerful tool. Just read the headlines at Gawker, Business Insider, or Mediaite.In consumer-focused e-commerce sites, courting controversy is smart because it can give the site more link equity, but few people will do enough research to find controversial views with which they disagree.For B2B sites, it’s worth avoiding unless you have one particular market segment you can target, but only by giving up on others. (For example, an SEO agency could write a post like “Why I’m Firing All my Diet Product Clients.”)In any reputation-dependent context, don’t overdo it. What should you write? The possibilities are endless. A few options:

Why [popular product used in the industry] is [overrated / absolutely essential / a scam].I Will Never Again [thing people in your industry do every day].The End of [competitor, or, to be more gentle, category of competitors].

With some work—actually, with a lot less work than you’d put into most other categories of linkbait—you can create content that drives fresh links and great social media mentions.

Search engines are leery of using sentiment as a ranking factor, but the average Web writer is sensitive to criticism.

This creates exactly the kind of discrepancy that the SEO industry has learned to take advantage of.

Textbook SEO and SEO That Really Works, What's the Difference?


In this article I'll explain the very general difference between SEO that really gets visitors to your website, and text book SEO that may get a lot of visitor to your site, but not as many as you could get. Learning the skills required for SEO is pretty much like learning to drive a car, the basics are, get in car, put seat belt on, adjust the rear vision mirror, start the car, back down the driveway.

Drive around the block, drive up the drive, park, turn key off, undo seat belt, get out of car...Easy peasy...And if that was all there was involved in driving many more people would have their drivers license. Right! Oh no, you might be saying, I paid $19.95 for an SEO book, and now I can do it all...in fact I hire my skills out, and get paid to do SEO.

Do you really think that someone that knows SEO would really put all the skills needed in a book that only cost $19.95?

1. For one thing, to explain all the techniques you require would take several books,

2. What SEO works for one site, is in my vast experience not what works for another site.

3. SEO books are most often written by someone wanting to sell something else like an SEO program, so they are geared towards selling.

4. I have edited several SEO books (17), and the job description is always, cut out anything that won't work for all websites. I have cut out whole chapters, several times, studd that is good SEO practice but doesn't work on a fishing website as compared to a site about fertility.

So your $19.95 SEO book will give you some general ideas, and now don't get me wrong, those general ideas, if done correctly may increase visitors from say 100 a month to say 1500 visitors a month. From 1 sale in 3 years to 10 sales a month and you may be happy with that.

However, it is possible that your site could get say 20,000 visitors a month and 133 sales...or how about 100,000 visitors and almost 700 sales a month. You won't learn those skills from a book. You may be a person like I am that tries things out, and over the years you may get that 700 sales a month.

But to fast track getting those sales you are better to have a good SEO consultant, that will look at your site specifically, and tell you what needs doing, in order to attract more visitors. Or of course you could hire a good SEO and get them to do the work for you, but if you have done some SEO already, then you are probably the type that would like more control.

Most of what you need to know is on the internet somewhere, finding the information is a massive job, and for every good SEO article online, there's 2 more that are a waste of time even reading, so there's a lot of sifting through the hay to find the seeds. Better to pay someone that knows, to tell you what to do, so you can spend your time doing SEO rather than thinking or learning about it.
