DJ Laser Lights - A Guide to Choosing the Right Laser Lighting for You

Laser lighting has grown extremely popular over the last decade. With every major club & mobile DJ company starting to add them to their set-up. And why wouldn't they? It's a cheap way to add an extra "it" factor to any lighting set-up and take an average light show to the next level.

But with all the different lasers out there choosing the best one can be difficult. With colors including green, red, blue, purple, yellow, pink & white; models including single, dual, quads, animations and twinklers, how do you decide what's perfect for your set up? Not to mention power levels ranging from 5mW - 5000mW.

First we'll look at the color. What you have to look at first is the environment you're setting. Do you want a darker more intimate environment? Or do you want a vibrant club style environment. If you're looking for the more intimate darker environment, your reds & purples will be an excellent choice. With purple and red being naturally "darker" mood colors the room will be set for a different more underground experience then that of a vibrant exploding club lighting set-up. Not to say a main stream club set-up is a bad thing. By taking greens, blues & yellows, you can change the boring same old club experience and turn it in to something of a different caliber; something new, something exciting.

Of course to maximize your lighting show you can always go with a multi-color laser. Being able to dictate the colors will not only allow you to sync the lasers with the rest of the show but will allow the ultimate control over your shows. Change the entire mood of the show with a simple change of color.

Next up, we'll touch on some tips of how to decide the style of laser that will work best. Some may thing this is an easy decision as it's simply choosing single - quad outputs or add the addition of animation, but this choice can either make or break a laser show. The key thing to remember here is more isn't always better. Rooms can be absolutely killed with too many lasers flying around. Don't try and fill a small club with 10 quad lasers, you'll get nothing but overkill and irritation. If you are a laser enthusiast with a smaller area one way to fix this is to cycle the lasers, for one point in the night use darker lasers, another time period brighter more vibrant lasers; this can also be a way to build up the crowds energy throughout the night perfectly.

Lastly, we take a look at the extreme range of strengths of lasers available. Before thinking of upgrading to the highest power you have to think about questions similar to the style of the laser. The higher the power isn't always the best choice. If using controlling software whether DMX or ILDA a high power laser can be a great choice as you can safely project the laser above the crowd without contact, while still keeping the sought after classic prestige laser effect. This doesn't mean the lower powers don't have their own advantage. For crowd patterns, disco ball scanning and wall sketching the lower powers will definitely hold their own and you won't need to worry about an overwhelmed crowd.

Though not complete the guide above can help a first time laser purchaser think about a few things before choosing what best fits the job. When buying a laser you also have to remember that a laser in person can be pretty different from the videos taken. Most of the time in a good way, videos can never do the just of the crisp beams that a laser can demonstrate in person.

Laser lights are the lighting of the future. Though they may still be an unknown force to most people you can always step ahead of the game and turn what may be a moderate laser light show to the next level in entertainment and set yourself aside from the competition.

Guide to Laser Engraving

With so many options on laser marking systems available today it is not surprising that many people get confused with which is the most suitable to their application. Many people don't even know that the term "laser", is actually an acronym - Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation - which explains the process by which a laser beam is created.

The basic theory of this is simple. A gain medium (the material that is used to create the laser light), is excited using either light or electrical energy to generate photons (the laser light). All of this is happening in a closed cavity, with a completely reflective mirror at one end, and a semi reflective one at the other. When the light bouncing around inside gains enough energy, it escapes through the semi-reflective mirror.

These high energy photons are then focused to a small spot (much like you did at school when you used a magnifying glass to focus the sunlight to burn things!). If it is a vector laser, this beam is deflected and directed using a pair of mirrors (X and Y deflection). This guide will help you understand the capabilities of the 3 most common lasers available in the market today:

· A CO2 laser: the Carbon Dioxide gas sealed inside the laser (along with some other gases - most commonly nitrogen, and helium) is pumped (excited / heated up) using electrical energy (DC, AC or RF) which creates the stream of photons.

· An Nd:YAG laser: the neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:Y3Al5O12) is pumped using a lamp or diode to emit the stream of photons.

· A Fiber laser: a glass fiber doped with a rare earth ion - most commonlyytterbium (Yb3+) - is diode pumped and the photons generated are reflected down the fiber towards the deflecting mirrors.

What are the differences?

The basic differences between the nd:YAG / Fiber and CO2 Lasers is the wavelength of the beam that it produces. The light emitted from a laser sits within the Invisible Light - Infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The light of the YAG and fiber lasers are emitted at a wavelength that is precisely 10 times smaller (1.064 µm) than that of a CO2 laser(10.6 µm).

This smaller wavelength also means that if the Nd:YAG/Fiber and CO2 lasers were used in the same application (with the same set-up). The Nd:YAG/Fiber would have a much smaller spot size and consequently, mark with a better resolution.

What difference does this make?

These wavelengths determine which laser should be used for each application, as the material to be marked will have different absorption capabilities (of the light at different wavelengths). If a material can absorb the light, then it can be affected by it.

Which one should I use for metal?

Most metals are highly reflective and therefore, an Nd:YAG or Fiber laser would be most suited. The wavelength being much shorter means there will be less reflection of the beam on the surface, therefore less loss of energy and consequently easier working of the metal. The metal absorbs more of the light energy that changes its physical properties.

Which one should I use for non - metal?

Organic materials such as wood, acrylics, plastics, fabrics, and transparent objects are better suited to the CO2 as the wavelength is longer and has more latitude. However the Nd:YAG and Fiber lasers can be used to mark some non-metals too. But if the object is transparent (eg. glass) then the YAG / Fiber laser light will pass through it without marking it.

Laser markers can produce alpha-numeric characters, bar codes, serial numbers, logo's, artwork and other graphic images using a non-contact thermal process.

Is there an easy way of knowing which would be most suitable?

Ideally, a sample of the material would have to be tested , but generally think of CO2 for Organic and YAG and its derivatives (Fiber, nd:YAG .. etc) for Non Organic materials.

Okay, I have decided to go for either an nd:YAG or Fiber laser, what are the differences?

· The nd:YAG uses a lamp or a diode pack (array) to excite the gain medium - these require more electrical power and wear out (and are very costly to replace). They, also produce a lot of heat and require more heat dissipation (some water cooled - most now use heat-sinks and thermo-electric cooling systems)

· The fiber lasers use many single emitter diodes that are cheaper to run, and will last the lifetime of the fiber. The mean time before failure is greater than 50,000hrs

· The fiber laser is more stable at all power levels.

· The light source with a fiber is completely sealed all the way to the marking head. This stops dust and particle contamination and enables longer working distances between the control unit and marking head. It also reduces any leakage and therefore increases the efficiency of the laser beam.

· The fiber laser "boots up" a lot quicker.

· The fiber laser has less replacement parts (such as resonator mirrors, crystals, fluids and filters)

Easy Guide To Laser Engraving

Early in the 1960's scientists discovered, that they could create a light source, focus the energy and have a tool powerful enough to affect a variety of materials. Laser marking is the preferred marking method when aesthetics or permanency is desired. Sometimes laser marking is referred to as laser etching; unlike conventional etching, it needs no masks or chemicals. Etching provides a permanent message on an in-process or finished component

Like many inventions of recent times, lasers were conceived in a laboratory. Virtually all materials can be laser engraved or laser marked. With advanced software you can laser engrave practically anything including Bar Codes, 2D codes, photographs and company logos and laser engraving of graphite is a clean operation. Think of a laser as a light source that is similar to a light bulb; a light bulb will emit energy all around it.

The ability to laser cut complex profiles can eliminate the need for additional operations, making this type of cutting highly economical. The laser metal cutting option can be added to some of the laser cutting machines. This cutting adds high precision, reduced contamination or warping, and a quality finish to industrial cutting applications.

You can mark most plastics from cattle tags to backlit day and night key switches. Typical industries that use laser marking include promotional, engineering and medical industries. Because no inks are used it is both permanent and the process is kind to the environment.

Some of the items that Co2 lasers and Co2 laser systems can be used include: marking and etching glass or quartz, in the manufacturing of glass doors and windows, for in permanent serial numbering, ANSI safety information, for customer logos, in some decorative or specialty glass manufacturing, in manufacturing data related to plant, production date and line, and/or in part numbers. Laser marking services can be used for many thousands of applications from computer keyboards to promotional gifts. It's flexible, programmable and environmentally clean.

Laser engraving can be used for most of the jobs currently being carried out by industrial engravers. It's also available in most engraving specialty stores because it's now the most common type of engraving.

Laser engraving, cutting and marking is a versatile technology that's being used by many engravers to improve productivity, add more services to their customers and increase profits. Engraving metal uses the most power especially if the metal is a hard metal. There are no consumables to contend with so operating costs are minimal, and the laser machine and system, if properly exhausted, runs clean, so that costly cleanup or by product disposal is unnecessary.

A Comprehensive Guide to Laser Skin Resurfacing

Before you consider laser skin resurfacing, it is advisable that you educate yourself first as to how the actual procedure will be performed. Laser resurfacing will give you the basic understanding of this treatment strategy. This article is created to provide you with all the relevant information that you may need as far as the different types of lasers used for skin resurfacing are concerned. The kind of laser to be used on you depends upon the type of procedure you are considering.

There are two particular lasers that are used at laser skin resurfacing centers today. These are the carbon dioxide laser or the CO2 and the Erbium laser or the Er:Yag. The carbon dioxide laser is the method of choice for simple skin resurfacing procedures. The Erbium, on the other hand, belongs to the class of relatively new lasers used for skin resurfacing. If you want extensive resurfacing, the practitioner may decide to go for the Er:Yag laser.

Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is normally used for removing the deep lines and wrinkles that have resulted from aging. It can also be used on certain layers of the skin to address acne problems, scars, fine lines, and other skin imperfections. The result of this laser procedure is very much like dermabrasion or skin peeling. The only difference is that carbon dioxide lasers work by vaporizing the skin layers. It does not use sanding products or chemicals to achieve the same effect. After using this type of laser, your skin will feel very tight. This is actually good for the eye region as it can decrease wrinkles and crow's feet on your face with little or no complications at all. However, the risk of scarring and infection is still there so extra care has to be observed.

The newer laser is the Erbium laser. While it works in the same way as the carbon dioxide laser, this one tends to vaporize lesser than the latter. If you are young and don't have too much problem on your skin, this is the type perfect for you. Patients with darker skin tone would also benefit from this laser. It works best for sun damage and acne scars. It is better than CO2 lasers in a way that it can be controlled easily by surgeons. As a result, better accuracy is achieved.

Laser skin resurfacing can provide you lasting and dramatic results all the time. While it cannot totally eliminate wrinkles, it can definitely improve the look of your face. Ask your surgeon as to how you can benefit from these procedures.

Laser Photography - A Guide on How to Take Professional Laser Photographs

Professionals involved in laser photography normally use thousands of dollars in sophisticated cameras and lighting equipment to achieve stunning laser photographs. This equipment is great to have and useful but for all but the highest quality work, it is not necessary. Outlined below is a simple list of the basic equipment needed for laser photography.

1 - Laser

The most important item of equipment is a laser. Laser modules that can be used continuously and are hands free are ideal and portable lasers such as laser pointers are also good. The power of the laser is not important and any power level over 1 to 2mW will be enough. The color of the laser is also not important and mainly a matter of personal preference. Blue lasers are popular for their beautiful beams.

2 - Camera

You can use any camera as long as it has an adjustable ISO (sensitivity to light) and shutter speed.

3 - Tripod

To keep the camera steady and avoid blur in the photos.

4 - Dark/dimly lit room or dimly lit out door setting

Different types of laser photography require different approaches, camera settings and techniques. I've listed below the main types of laser photography and how take photos for each.

Laser writing and drawing

This kind of laser photography is the easiest and can be done properly with minimal difficulty .

An ISO of 100 to 200 will work best in most situations and set the shutter speed to at least 4 seconds. The best shutter speed will depend on how much time you need to write or draw.

For best effect and to avoid problems such as shadows, keep the laser beam parallel to the camera. The easiest way is to stand just behind the camera with the laser.

Outdoor beam photography

The one trick to out door beam shots is that you should not take them in dark setting. The laser beam will be very bright and clear but there will be just a pitch black background that provides no contrast or perspective. A dimly lit setting such as a road at night lit by street lights is ideal.

Use a standard shutter speed and an ISO of at least 200.

Moving beams and background/people

This is the hardest type of laser photography to do yet can produce great shots in nightclubs and raves. One trick and some simple settings are all that's necessary to do this type of laser photography properly.

ISO should be set at a level where you can clearly see the beam, a shutter speed of 1/50 is normally long and the lens aperture should be set as wide as possible. You do not want ISO to be too high or there will be too much noise in the photo.

The trick with this kind of photography is the flash comes after the exposure not before. That way the laser beam is captured with out being over powered by flash but the flash will still freeze/capture the motion of the people.

Now it is time to pull out your cameras, charge up your lasers and take some great photographs.

Buy Green Laser Pointers - A Laser Pointer Price Guide For Buying Green Beam Success

If you are looking to buy green laser pointers you are going to want to do some research to ensure that the laser pointer you are purchasing produces a solid 532nm green laser beam. The reason that research will be vital here is because there are just too many green laser pointer distributors out there on the web, and the fact is that not all of them ar 100% trustworthy.

So listen closely as we cover some major points that will help you achieve green beam success when you are trying to buy green laser pointers at a reasonable price. First and foremost, you need to determine what exactly are you looking for. In other words, what sort of laser applications are you going to be performing? Does the green beam need to be powerful in output power? Do we need a constant on/off laser engagement switch or is a temporary push button sufficient? Are we considering distance, and if so how far will the green beam need to be visible for? So before we even start doing research on where to shop, we need to really sit down and determine what is our laser going to be used for in the first place.

When you have a clear idea of what your laser tool will be used for, then we can begin to crawl the web looking for the finest quality diodes that we can purchase at a reasonable price. There is, however, something that any hobbyist or professional must keep in mind: Buying cheap is not necessarily going to mean you have gotten the best laser deal. More often that not, the cheaper, lower cost laser pointers are manufactured with poor quality green laser crystals and housed in less than adequate laser casings. This can save you a few bucks, but what is the point of a few pennies saved when your laser burns out within the first two weeks and you find yourself searching the web yet again looking to buy a new unit. So if you are going to spend a little money on the device, do yourself a favor and do it correctly.

When you see a module that you like and which falls within your budget, then you can really start to consider placing your order. Be sure that the retailer you are working with has reasonably priced lasers. The market for buying pointers is relatively competitive, a lot of companies are offering the same goods, so a little bit of market research can tell you very quickly which laser company is providing the best deal. No sense in buying the same 95mw green laser pointer at $300 when you can get it for $200, right?

When you have found a reliable source, be sure to take a look at the laser safety equipment they are offering as well. Lasers, though electric and brilliant in their performance, can be very dangerous if used incorrectly. You must always keep the safety of others and yourself a number one priority so that the beam does not cause any bodily harm to people that are present. Take your experiments seriously, and your casual use as well. It does not take too much dense light to damage a persons retinas, so be careful where you point your laser.

Finally, be sure that the green laser pointer you are going to buy has some type of warranty attached to it. Sometimes a laser will burn out prematurely, but this is ok if you are working with a top notch laser company. They will gladly replace the green laser for you, free of charge, if you have found the right retailer. So do your research, and buy green laser pointers with a good knowledge about what is out there so that you can make the best educated consumer decision and get the brightest green bang for your buck.

James has been buying green laser pointers since they were first made available to the public. He has designed various green laser accessories and written extensively in the laser light technology field. His preferred laser provider is certified BigLasers.com, where he personally chooses to buy green laser pointers.

Quick Guide To Laser Engraving

Lasers can engrave on just about any material. The most popular materials in the engraving fields are coated metals, wood, acrylic, glass, leather, marble, plastic, and host of synthetic materials made specifically for lasers. You can think of a laser as a light source similar to a light bulb - a light bulb will emit energy out all around it.

Laser marking is also referred to as laser etching. Unlike conventional etching, laser etching needs no masks or chemicals. Some people just call it laser etching and others call it laser engraving but basically the technique uses a computer-controlled laser beam to mark a surface. It didn't take long for the engraving industry to notice the new lasers and soon lasers were being used for a wide variety of industrial applications including welding, heat-treating, etching and engraving.

And almost all materials can be laser engraved/laser marked. The light source name - LASER, is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

You can also cut metal with lasers. The laser metal cutting option can be added to some models of the laser cutting machines. The ability to laser cut complex profiles can eliminate the need for additional operations, making laser cutting very economical. Lasers work well for cutting acrylic (Plexiglas), PETG, thin polycarbonates (Mylar), styrene expanded PVC (Sintra), wood, paper and fabric.

Laser etching can be done on many other materials including slate, granite, stainless steel, leather, arborite, glass, mirrors, and premium hard woods. And laser cutting offers a superior cut-edge quality with parallel sides and no burrs.

Industries that use laser marking include the promotional, engineering and medical industries. It's a process in which material is indelibly marked at some very fast speeds (milliseconds per character). Some of the items that C02 lasers and C02 laser systems can be used for in terms of marking and etching glass or quartz are float glass plants, manufacturing of glass doors and windows, permanent serial numbering, ANSI safety information, customer logos, decorative or specialty glass manufacturing, manufacturing data related to plant, the production date and line, and/or part numbers.

Laser marking of glass by C02 lasers on the fly or while moving can be an excellent addition for many industrial environments and the applications for glass marking. Because no inks are used in the marking, the services are both permanent and the process is kind to the environment. You can mark easily in batches from 1 to 10,000.

There are no consumables involved so the operating costs are minimal, and the laser system, if properly exhausted, runs very clean, so that costly cleanup or by-product disposal is not needed. Some of the many laser engraving products include wedding giveaways, nametags, table nameplates, trophy engraving and laser wood engraving.

Today laser engraving can be used for most of the jobs currently being carried out by the conventional industrial engravers. It's a viable and versatile technology that is being used by many engravers to improve productivity, add more services for their customers and increase their profits. Many companies can be found online that make laser engraving machines, laser marking systems and laser etching equipment.

Guide to Cold Laser Therapy and Its Many Health Benefits

Cold laser therapy, or low level laser therapy, is a treatment in which a cold laser is used to treat acute and chronic pain. It is also called a "soft laser." If you suffer from back pain, joint pain, tendonitis, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, neuropathy, neck pain, or other related health conditions, cold laser therapy might be a viable solution for you.

How it Works

Cold laser therapy works by increasing the levels of serotonin to help your body heal itself. The therapy is noninvasive and non-thermal. The cold laser was derived from phototherapy, a light healing method developed more than 30 years ago. In phototherapy, a special type of light penetrates the surface of the skin as well as underlying tissues to stimulate natural healing in the body. The low level laser light used in cold laser therapy is actually the compressed light of a wavelength from the red part of the light spectrum, or the cold part.

During the cold laser process, the body's cells are exposed to photon energy, which in turn increases the cells' metabolism, helps to develop muscle tissue and collagen, improves blood circulation, stimulates tissue repair and the healing of wounds, and stimulates the nervous and immune systems.

Cold lasers are also used in acupuncture to stimulate the acupoints of the body without using needles.

Types of Cold Laser Treatments

There are several types of cold laser treatments such as the Q1000 Laser, 660 Probe, 808 Probe, Q1000 Propack, and the Q10 Laser. The Q1000 Laser features nine different wavelengths meant to help cells for nerves, muscles, bone, ligaments, skin and tendons. Also with the Q1000 Laser, light is sent through quartz crystal, which gives the laser organic characteristics.

The 660 Probe is a gentle cold laser that penetrates deep into the body and provides more concentrated healing. It is often used for dental healing, facial or skin treatment, acupuncture, anti-aging, physical therapy, and more.

The 808 Probe uses an infrared laser to reach cells in the innermost parts of the body. It helps with bones and teeth as well as ligaments, tendons, and joints. The Q10 Laser is less expensive than the Q1000 and helps with injuries, pain, and facial rejuvenation. It's also great for traveling. The Q1000 Propack combines all soft lasers into one package.

Using Healing Lasers

You can use healing lasers at home. Some lasers require training while others are fairly simple to use. The simpler models are designed so you can hold the laser near your body in the area where treatment is needed without discomfort. The laser does the work for you. The lasers also have different modes to help with certain needs. If you are considering cold laser treatments, consult with your doctor first.

With cold laser therapy, you can aid your body in healing using a natural, effective method. Keep this guide handy while seeking the cold laser products that are right for you.

Guide to Choosing SEO Keywords

Search Engine Optimization is vital for any business that decides to make its presence felt in the market through the Internet. However, when venturing out into the SEO world, it is important to choose the right SEO keywords and optimize them. Mining for the right SEO keywords may take a considerable amount of your time and effort, but the fruits of it will be rewarding.

First, it is important to understand the importance of keyword selection and how to use your keywords on your website in order to enhance your marketing strategy.

Keyword research is one of the most basic steps in a good search engine optimization design and without it all SEO efforts will be wasted. Also, it is important to perform a thorough keyword research before you start placing keywords on your webpage.

SEO Keyword Research

Keyword Research is the process of identifying a list of keywords and then selecting those keywords that accurately reflect your products and services. It involves finding out which are the most popular terms searched by Internet users, how widely they are searched and how many and which other websites run on those keywords.

It is also important to think in terms of how your target audience would search for products or services on the Internet. For instance, if you have a website promoting a golf club, then it would not make much sense for you to target keywords like "golf" or "golfing" because these keywords are extremely general and have tons of competitors. Also, since you are targeting only people who are looking out for a golf club, using a general keyword like "golf" will bring in a lot of irrelevant traffic. This is because visitors may be looking for anything related to golf, such as golf history, golf tips, golf news, and so on. Typically a person who is looking out for a golf club will type in "golf club" and related terms instead of the single term "golf." So from this example it is evident that the best choice of keywords for you would be to use phrases like "golf club" instead of single and general keywords.

You can use keyword research tools (free and paid) that are available online in order to see what users are searching for. There are several such tools which contain data on search queries performed by users over a period of time. These tools will help you get an idea on the kind of terms that are searched for and also their frequency of search. Any keyword research tool will let you enter a word and show results on similar terms including variations, synonyms, misspellings, singulars, and plurals. Not only do these tools provide information on search volume but also show data on the advertiser competition for keywords.

Once keyword research is done and you have built your keyword list, these keywords can then be placed at appropriate places in your webpage content to achieve a high ranking in search engines. However, avoid placing too many on the same page as search engines consider this practice as keyword stuffing and may penalize your site for it.

SEO Keyword Tactics

Keyword Research will help you get the most popular, lucrative, and top SEO keywords which may be searched by thousands of users in a day. However, if there are several competitors for the keywords you have chosen, then it will be very difficult to beat those sites and get the top ranking in the search results. Conversely, if you choose keywords that are very specific or niche that no one searches on them, then top ranking for your site is wasted as there would be none to see it. The idea behind choosing the right SEO keywords is that they should help you achieve top ranking with reasonable efforts and budget. If your site fails to show on the first or second page of the search results then it would really not be worth the time and effort that would have gone in optimizing those keywords.

You will most often find that the best SEO keywords are already being used by a large number of competitors and these high volume keywords may be very tempting to use but may not always fetch you the ranking you desire. Therefore, the catch here is to fish out those keywords that have strong relevance to your website, high search volume, and relatively less competition because these keywords will be more rewarding than just high volume competitive keywords. It is quite possible to achieve a good search engine ranking while staying within your budget and with minimal effort using low volume less competitive SEO keywords when compared to high volume ones. To do this, you need to find out how tough it is to get a good ranking for a specific keyword and this can be done using keyword difficulty tools.

SEO Guide For Beginners: Part-1

With this article I am starting the SEO guide, which is dedicated specially to beginners, who have recently started a blog or website either for their business or to make money online. I will cover all the SEO aspects the so called SEO Expert use to rank higher in search engines.

What is SEO?

Let me start with short introduction of What SEO is all about. As the name suggest, SEO means search engine optimization. It involves optimizing your website to rank well for particular search keyword or phrase in Google like major search engines.

Why SEO Is important?

If I need to answer this question in single word, it will be the "Competition". The main source of website traffic is from search engines. If you are not being listed in search engine, people can not find you or your website because they do not know your website address. Hence it is required to optimize your website and target it for particular keywords. It will help your visitors to find you easily in search engine result pages.

What are the main parts of SEO?

There are only two main parts of SEO, one is On-Page SEO and another is Off-Page SEO.  On-page SEO is what you can directly do on your web page and the Off-Page SEO is what you do on other websites to build backlinks and improve value of your website on Internet.

On-Page SEO Involves:

Keyword optimization.
Title, Meta description and content.
Content optimization for targeted keywords.Off-Page SEO Involves:

Link Building Strategies.
Social Media Marketing Strategies. Each topic in On-page and Off-page SEO may include many different strategies. For example only Link Building can be done in many ways like...

Article Marketing.
Blog Commenting.
Forum Posting.
Reciprocal Linking, Purchasing backlinks. There are main type of SEO strategies are White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO Strategies. White hat SEO is the way to optimize your website in genuine and ethical and natural way, while in Black hat SEO few or all techniques are used to play with search engine algorithms and try to fool them.

Black hat can some time give you amazing result, but they are totally wrong thing to do and will soon make your website blacklisted from all major search engines. Hence I will cover only white hat SEO techniques in this article series or SEO guide for beginners. In next article I will start with On Page SEO Strategies.

Hope you liked this very first article of "SEO Guide For Beginners" series. You can stay tuned to this series or learn current SEO strategies with me at SEO Explain and online business at Make Money Online.

Guide to Choosing the Perfect Ethical SEO

Search engine optimization is a crucial factor when you are designing a website for a special audience. It is mostly used by online traders, as they need to make a website that can easily be found by their customers. Internet marketing relies on customers ultimately and they find your website through search engines. Due to this demand, there are many companies and websites on the internet that market themselves as SEO Experts to help you gain the required rank in search engine results pages.

Let's know how to choose the perfect Ethical SEO that would be best in getting you the ranking that would be helpful in your business development.

Confirm Your SEO's Ability to Get a Rank for Their Own Website

The first thing that you should confirm is the SEO's ability to get a rank for his own website. This is the decisive testimonial to your SEO's potential to achieve a rank for your site. If it couldn't bring enough of their own expertise to get a rank for itself, then the SEO's ability to help your site covet a rank is in doubt.

Of course, newly established SEO firms are exceptions for this. In this case, you should try to do some inquires about the persons involved in the incorporation of such firms. If they have persons formerly associated with good SEO experts, then prospects are these people can bring their knowledge to the firm for your benefit.

Keep Away from the SEO's That Offer Extravagant SEO Promises

With increasing competition, many SEOs are certain to give you extravagant promises just to persuade you to get yourself their services and help them to earn money. Learning how to identify when such promises are realistic or just purely marketing tricks will help you to prevent such tricks and losses due to expenditures.

As a webmaster, it is significant for you to have some fundamental knowledge on how search engines work. This is one technique to differentiate the realistic promises from the extravagant ones that many SEO firms boast of in their advertisements.

Check your SEO's User Portfolio, User Feedbacks & Testimonials

Whenever you are making a purchase from an ecommerce website, you will surely check the user comments along with the product details before you decide to purchase and spend money. This is for the reason that you are looking for the evidence that the product could deliver what it is boasting about, and that it's not just spewing air.

The same research applies to choosing a Perfect Ethical SEO. Once you have read and confirmed that they are really promising realistic results, then you should try to make sure if they could come back their promises up, rather with a portfolio. This portfolio highlights some examples of their successful work, particularly a website or many several websites that your SEO has helped in gaining a high rank in search engine results pages.

You should also check user feedbacks about the firm from their forums and testimonials so that you can get a picture of the company's reputation.

Keep Away from Black Hat SEO Techniques

In the competition to get rank, it is however obvious and likely that someone out there would choose to use unauthorized optimization techniques that are fatefully successful in making a site achieve high rank faster than normal. In web site design and SEO terminology, these techniques are known as black hat SEO techniques.

Black Hat Techniques are risky to use. Although indeed they could get you a high rank in no time, but if a search engine recognizes that your site is using any black hat SEO techniques, they can ban your website from appearing in the search engines results pages. Thus, you would be losing the money that you have paid to your SEO firm that really employs black hat SEO techniques while the firm getting off with it.

Cloaking (hiding the site's real content from the search engine crawlers) and link farming are a few examples of the common black hat SEO techniques. If the SEO hints at using such techniques, then you better keep away from their services as ultimately the loss is yours.

5 Reasons Why You Should Not Do SEO Yourself - The Honest Guide!

Almost everyone can be successful online if they take the time to understand and apply the SEO principles. But understanding SEO principles and differentiating between SEO myths and facts will most certainly take months if not years to do. Most people know the theory behind SEO but have never taken the time to apply it themselves.

That is where SEO companies come in. Some of them provide you standard services with minimal benefit while others are expert in providing unique services, which their competitors just cannot copy.

The bottom line is that unless you have spent months or years understanding SEO and applying it, it is better to outsource this job to someone more experienced in this area. Here are 5 reasons why you should not do SEO yourself:

1. SEO is all about experience: Almost everyone can undertake SEO but most of the people do not know how to do it right. Seasoned SEO consultants have spent years testing out different techniques and have met with many failures on their way to success. If you do not have the time to apply SEO techniques yourself, it is better to outsource this job.

2. There are only 24 hours in a day: Good quality links are comparatively more difficult to find. It is very difficult and time-consuming for a beginner to successfully find good quality links. When I started in the internet marketing realm, I used to put 5 hours daily for 3 months and got only 600 links to my website! Good SEO consultants know where to get the links from and how to do the job quickly. If you are a beginner, do not spend your valuable hours doing the link building yourself. Hire an SEO firm to do the job for you!

3. There are too many factors involved: As I keep on studying SEO, I am exposed to new stuff that did not even exist to me before. While many SEO books try to simplify the whole game by presenting you with a list of factors, it is a horrible over-simplification. Although basic SEO can be done quite quickly, getting your website ranked high for competitive keywords requires you to do a lot of things right at the same time.

4. Buying SEO software can be costly: If you start doing your websites SEO yourself, you will need to invest a considerable amount in buying good quality SEO software. Although SEO can be done without the software, doing so severely diminishes your chances of success. SEO consultants and firms have already invested in the needed software, which makes them more efficient for the job! If you hire them, you do not have to pay the hefty price of buying and understanding the SEO software yourself.

5. You can hold the SEO firms accountable: This is one of the best points why you should not do the SEO yourself. If you hire an SEO consultant, he can be held accountable for the results he provides you. In contrast, if you do SEO in the wrong way, it is only you who is held accountable for the lack of good results. Clearly, if you are not that experienced in SEO, you need to outsource this job in order to reduce your risk.

SEO Services - Guide to Basic Internet Marketing That Delivers Traffic

SEO Services:

Search engine optimization or SEO has become one of the most important components of Internet marketing strategies. It is a tool that enhances the process of increasing the quality and quantity of web traffic improving and provides organic search results. The normal trend is that the higher a website is ranked on the search result page, the more traffic it will get. SEO services can vary from website to website depending on the requirement but is used on website headings, in text or body copy, design and even on images.

There are many people who have a website that displays some of the best products, has some well written content and offer great service and yet these sites don't receive even half the desired traffic. This is simply because they didn't understand the importance of SEO nor did they realize its potential in driving the targeted traffic. Great products, excellent services and a site that is very well written. To enhance your website, you will require the services of a SEO consultant or an SEO copywriter who knows his/her job very well.

A SEO copywriter will add more depth to your existing website copy by adding singular or plural keywords, synonyms and keyword phrases. Now that you have understood the common practices, let us take a look at the two broad categories of SEO services. They are:

On-Page Optimization
Off-Page Optimization

On-page optimization SEO services :

Well researched keywords
Correct use of Meta tags
Keyword density optimization
On-page optimization is the most commonly applied category within the SEO services and it focuses on two elements namely, your webpage content and the website structure or architecture. The key element is your web page content and you need to take special care while writing the content. Your web page content has to be relevant and in sync with the product or services you are selling or promoting. The best way to get your website on the top of the page ranking is by using various SEO techniques. Effective use of SEO techniques can actually bring results within a short period of time.

Off-Page Optimization SEO services:

Increasing link exchange/link building/ link popularity: You can exchange your website links with another website and thus gain mileage without spending money. You can even display your link on various article directories
Using keyword rich anchor text
Submission to article directory: This is a cost free method of gaining mileage or promoting your website. There are hundreds of article directories available today for submission purposes. Most of them won't charge you anything but there are a few who would charge you a membership fee. You can do this yourself but a well optimized article will increase your relevancy thus its effectiveness.

SEO services or SEO techniques are based on certain common practices and these include:

Well researched keywords: SEO services are actually aimed at getting your site a higher rank in all search engines. To get the higher ranking, your website content needs to be keyword rich and hence you need to select the right keywords. This research for the right keywords or keyword phrase is an integral part of the entire search engine optimization process. The keyword phrase research is a process of selecting those keyword phrases, which are optimized and will help visitors to find your website. The important thing is to follow the right approach to find these keywords. If you are selling camping tents, then your keyword needs to be associated with the product and the activity for which it is used.

Heading of the web page: The heading is the most important part of any web page as it always catches the eye due to its positioning. Hence, you can always use catchy copy or tag lines to draw attention or create curiosity. Hence to create a higher visibility, you can use a primary keyword in the heading. There are two types of keywords: primary and secondary. Let's take an example: If you are offering web design, then your primary keyword will be web site design, graphic design, banner design etc. The search engines always give higher priority to the primary keyword or the keyword used in the heading. One more thing to remember is the length of text in single page. The ideal word limit is 500 because this helps to understand the keyword relevance. Not all the search engines will read through the entire page hence, try to keep the primary keywords in the beginning.

Meta tags: Meta tags, one of the SEO services, can't really be seen like the text. It is normally embedded in the code or the html. Meta tags help in letting the search engine crawler's index your website in an accurate manner. There are different types of Meta tags like the title tags, Meta description tags, Meta keyword tags and body tags.
What to avoid from a SEO company: Make sure that the SEO firm you hire does not practice black hat techniques that can get your site banned completely from the search engine... why would they do that? To get you the unrealistic goals they set and once they have "fulfilled" their end of the contract they leave you hanging with a banned site.

A Step By Step Guide To Effective Online Article Marketing

Online article marketing can effectively improve organic search results in a number of ways:

Improve visibility for your target keyword phrasesObtain traffic for additional (long tail) keyword searchesAssist in building awareness and reputationIncrease targeted traffic from other quality related websitesHelps attract more incoming links to your siteHelps make your website more unique and useful

Google’s Panda update showed once again, that it’s important to have high quality, unique content. We recently evaluated a large ecommerce website that was stung by the Panda update. They have a few issues that have probably hurt them, but one of the areas of concern included many articles they had written and placed on various websites, many of which had been devalued in Panda.

In this article, I’ll cover the steps we take with article marketing. These steps have been developed from years of examining what competitors of our clients have done to become the ranking and traffic leaders in their industries. Effective article marketing is a key strategy for many of them.

Let’s dispel a misconception right now. Submitting articles to article submission sites, especially low quality articles written primarily for search results, does little for you.

We examined the results of the work done for one of our clients, for example, by their prior SEO who was writing low quality articles and submitting them to article submission sites like ehow.com with links to their site. These articles where doing almost nothing for them (and this was prior to Panda). Checking their analytics, we saw that no traffic ever came from these article submission sites, ever! It’s very unlikely that these articles helped their search engine rankings at all.

Most article submission sites do not pass much, if any “link juice” (or PageRank or whatever you want to call it) to the sites the articles link to. We found none of these articles in any of the tools we use to identify strong links, those that may be helping improve search positions. Finally, none of the articles were ever picked up and run by any other site (no surprise as they’re not very good or useful articles).

Having your Web marketing company produce low quality articles is of little value to anybody (other than the marketing company that gets paid to write the articles).

Effective article marketing is about writing quality articles that are useful or interesting to your market, using some on your own website and getting some published on other related websites.

Here are our goals for online article marketing for our clients:

Improving Organic Search Results (Getting found for more keyword searches and helping to increase rankings).Help Attract Incoming Links To The Site.Building Awareness And Often Reputation Building.Increasing Targeted Traffic From Related Sites. To Help Make A Web Site More Unique And Useful (e.g. Help educate your readers, help them decide what products/services to buy, etc.).

Later, we’ll outline how to market articles to related websites but if you aren’t writing quality articles now, then get started by writing articles to use on your own website. You need some momentum and a critical mass of example articles before you can market articles to others.

Write articles that will be helpful to your website visitors and place summaries of the articles around your website where your site visitors will see them when they are interested in the topic. Don’t just put them in a blog or section of the site where most of your website visitors may never see them.

Crutchfield, the electronics reseller, for example, does an excellent job using articles on their website. Helpful articles (and more and more videos) are suggested as visitors examine product pages or browse product categories.

Browse to the Home Theater categories page, for example, and you’ll see articles and videos suggested such as those in the screen shot below.

Helpful Articles and Videos Suggested While Shopping Helpful Articles and Videos Suggested While Shopping

You want to make it easy for your article readers to get back to the location on your website they were looking at when they clicked to read the article.

For this reason, it’s best to host the articles on your website surrounded by the same or a very similar page template (banner, navigation sections etc) as that on the webpage they were looking at when they clicked through to the article.

It’s ok to host the articles in your blog, but it’s ideal if the blog has the same or similar page template too. We suggest that for most marketers your blog be a part of your main website, not a separate blog web site (See “Where to put your blog for best search engine results“). Put any articles that you do not use on your main website in your blog.

Include links in your articles to products and services

Add links within the article or at the end of the article (or both) to get people who read the article to click through the main website, ideally to product or service category or item pages related to the article. As you progress with article marketing and get more and more people linking or sharing your articles, these links will help pass additional PageRank to your product and service pages helping them to rank better.

Add social sharing buttons and announce your articles

Add social sharing buttons (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc) to your articles. Announce each of your useful articles through your social networks and other communication vehicles (like e-newsletters, etc) that you use. If they are truly useful articles some people will share them or link to them, which will help improve rankings and get more people to read them and learn what you have to offer.

Placing articles on your website helps entice visitors to read them why they are looking at related topics they are interested in. Useful articles help convey your expertise and make your webpages more unique (more important than ever after Panda).

In addition, these articles add content to the site that search engines should index and they’ll likely be found in searches. Finally, as you progress with article and social marketing, you’ll likely attract more and more incoming links to your articles from related websites bringing more targeted traffic and helping to increase rankings.

You should never be at a loss for ideas for useful articles. Here are some tips to come up with compelling content.

Keyword research

Use your favorite keyword research tool to search on your important product or service keywords and see what related information people are searching for. You can write articles that address some of these searches.

For example, if your site is all about luggage and you see a number of people searching on phrases such as “carryon luggage regulations”, “carryon luggage sizes” etc you might write an article about carryon luggage regulations and sizes and include links to relevant pages on your site.

In this manner not only will you be helping to make your site more useful to your visitors, these articles will probably be returned in search results for people searching on phrases such as “carryon luggage regulations” who may read your article and learn about what you have to offer.

FAQ’s

What questions are you often asked about your products or services? Think about writing articles that answer some of those questions.

Search for articles ideas

You’ll usually find many articles by searching on your primary topic, product or service keywords and appending “articles” or “blogs” to the query such as “travel articles” or “travel blogs”. Or, search on the keywords within some of the article submission sites (search on “articles” and you’ll find tons of submission sites) . Scan through the article headlines for ideas (Ideas = inspiration. Not plagiarism.)

Can’t write or don’t have the time to write articles? Here are some ways to get articles written.

Empower your people

Perhaps some of the people who sell or market your products would just love to write articles. See the Crutchfield site mentioned above. Most of those articles and videos were developed by their product marketing folks.

Ask your customers

Perhaps some of your customers can write articles such as case stories like “how we use xx” type of articles.

Hire writers

Ideally, most of your articles should be original, but you could hire writers who specialize in your topics to produce useful articles. There are networks of writers who specialize in many topics. You can find some of them while you are searching for article ideas (See the section above).

As you look for article ideas, search on the names of the authors. Many times you’ll discover the author is a freelance writer who specializes in a couple of fields. Contact them about writing for you. It’s best to be honest and include the writer’s name as the author.

Use ghost writers?

This is an ethical question that I’m on the fence about and have never used myself or for any client. I believe it may be ok to use a ghost writer (such as a freelance writer who specializes in your field/topic) if you work closely with them, outline your initial thoughts, let them do research for you if needed, oversee the development of the article, work with them to revise the article, and make sure the article is accurate and reflects your knowledge and opinions.

Opinions expressed in the article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land.

A Business Owner's Guide to SEO Basics

What is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the term used to describe the process of driving a website to be more popular on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc. When people search phrases or words in a search engine (also known as keywords), the results and the order that they appear in is the direct effect of SEO.

Do you need SEO?

Generally most businesses would answer this question with a resounding yes, however how much you choose to invest into SEO is dependent upon how you want to do business. A lot of business that you generate most likely derives from word of mouth referrals, however, studies from Forrester Research shows that 93% of consumers worldwide use search engines to find and access websites.

Consumers are significantly more likely to initiate contact and purchase a product or service from a business that they can find online. If your site can't be easily located online, then your business is missing out on substantial prospective business.

How does SEO work?

There are a lot of factors concerning SEO. The keywords you choose and the popularity of the search for them and the competition that you have with those keywords are just the beginning. The titles, descriptions, url names, html framework/validity, tags and how they are used are also crucial factors. Backlinks to your site and popularity are also factors. There are hundreds factors and penalties that search engines use in order to deploy SEO. SEO could easily be likened to chemistry. Which brings me to my next point:

Should you hire someone for SEO?

Absolutely. It is possible for anyone to learn, but let's be honest, you have a business to run. SEO takes a lot of time to learn, employ, and maintain. For most business owners to become expert SEO analysts is unreasonable, but you should be armed with the knowledge of what you need to be more successful from SEO, and what to expect from anyone you employ to do it.

In order to have an effective SEO campaign, I would strongly urge anyone to employ an SEO professional. Fortunately, a lot of web design firms specialize in SEO, has someone on staff that does, or can refer you to someone. If your designer does not - there are plenty on the market.

What should you watch for when shopping for an SEO specialist?

Be extremely cautious of anyone who promises you the top spot on Google or immediate results. As good as that sounds, it really is too good to be true.

Effective SEO is slow and steady which equates to months and months of work. It is important to note that the months and months of work are in bits and pieces and not 40-hour work weeks. There are no fast tracks to SEO success and make no mistake about it, search engines are not easily fooled. There are penalties for what has been coined as "Black Hat" SEO techniques. Here are just a few Black Hat SEO techniques:

Keyword stuffing (packing long lists of keywords on your site)
Invisible text (this is done by placing text in your html that does not show up on your website when viewed)
Doorway pages (pages that are added to your website, but never seen)
Tiny text or alt text (placing very small text on your page for spamming keywords)
Mirror sites (sites that is a duplicate of your site)
Submitting your site repeatedly to search engines (which is seen as spamming)Using any of the above tactics will not only get your site penalized in search rankings, it will more than likely get your site banned from search engines altogether.

Back links (links on other websites that link to yours) are important to SEO, and getting bad ones or spam links, are not good for SEO. Beware of companies/individuals who use this technique as well. When consulting with an SEO professional, ask them to provide you with a "plan of action" or how they intend to help your SEO. If you see any of the above Black Hat techniques, keep shopping.

Those techniques will work, for about 5 minutes until the search engines figure it out, and they usually do, and then it's ban city. You'll have to undo the Black Hat techniques, reformat, resubmit your site, and hopefully they will accept your site again. You are back to square one and have to now employ a legitimate SEO specialist.

How long does SEO take?

A long time. I like instant gratification as much as the next person, but SEO is where patience really pays off. Once your site is submitted to a search engine it usually can take 1-3 weeks to get indexed, but that's not a promise. After that, it's time to start tweaking the SEO process. Search engines do not update as much as we would like them to, popular keywords today may not be popular next week, if you rank high today - that spot isn't guaranteed forever, or even for tomorrow for that matter, ranks fluctuate, and trends change.

With that said, SEO is not a one time event, it is an ongoing process. There are likely thousands of websites who want your spot and if you give up on maintaining SEO efforts, you will lose it, usually pretty fast. A lot of SEO and/or web design companies have packages or hourly rates for SEO and you can choose how much you want to invest in any given month or timeframe.

Now that you have a better understanding of what SEO is, how it works, and it's importance to your business, you are well on your way to making smart business decisions concerning your website and it's marketing.

An In Depth Guide to Improving your Adsense Revenue

This post will describe ways to improve Google Adsense revenue from your existing websites or blogs.

In the last year, over half of the Adsense income I have received has not come from new ads or new traffic, it has been from tweaking my current ad placements.

This post is for those who already are using Adsense or are at least familiar with how to use it.

This is a long post. You will likely make more money off your stuff if you read it and try the things I mention. If you have old websites that you haven’t updated lately or are trying make more money off of, this post is for you.

Over the last year I have tried many things with my older sites using Adsense, some were simple and obvious, some went counter to what you might think would work. I just tried things to see if they would pan out or not.

There is no Adsense Fairy

Some of what I will say is common knowledge but before rolling your eyes ask yourself if you are actually doing these things. Everyone  knows that exercise is good for them, but it doesn’t mean they are actually doing it.

The difference between making more money and not making more money is actually doing things.

How to make more money from Adsense without screwing anything up

There are several methods of changing up your Adsense, but they fall into just a few categories…

  • Changing ad type

  • Changing ad size

  • Changing ad placement

  • Changing ad colors

  • Using custom Adsense search

For each of these subjects, we will look at the common best practices, ways to implement those practices, ideas that I have found useful, and how to test them.

Changing Ad Type – Image vs Text ads

The simplest, easiest change you can make to your ads is changing the ad type. This simple step can really make a big difference in ad income. I am writing it first because I think it is the first thing someone should do when trying to improve their income.

You can change your ad type without changing the size of your ads or the layout of your pages.

It is the least intrusive of all the methods I will describe, so it is a good place to start.

What do I mean change ad type?

If you are using text ads change to image ads, if you are using image ads change to text ads.

This may sound simple, but I have had this small step double my Adsense income on some pages. It is really a great first step into tweaking your ads. You may hear many differing opinions about which type is better, but the bottom line is this.

Until you try both, you do not know what works best for your particular webpage.

The goal here is to determine if you can make more money off of one ad type over the other. To do this you must…

1. Change ad type

2. Wait a few days

3. See if you are making more or less.

Changing your ad type takes only a few moments, imagine if you are like me and you did this small change and received 2 or 3 times the amount of income. It would be a few moments well worth taking. On some pages this worked incredibly for me, on some it made no difference whatsoever. You may not see a change or you may already be using the best type, but this is good information to have either way.

How to change your Google Adsense type between text and image ads

1. Go to your Adsense account

2. Choose Adsense setup

3. Choose Manage ads

4. Find ad you want to change and then choose edit ad

5. Choose ad format

By choosing “image ads only” or “text ads only” you will change the ad type being shown on your page. If you do not see these options, then your Adsense code is old, and you will just have to make a new one and choose the “image only” or “text only” option as you do.

Each webpage is different, some will do well with image ads, some will do well with text ads, some will do about the same.

My advice is to take one or two webpages (not an entire site) and just change the ads on those one or two pages. Make sure the pages have enough traffic so you can have a meaningful before/after comparison. If you see a higher click through rate with one type, then use that type throughout your site more.

Adsense Ad Size – What Size is Best?

As you probably know, Google has stated that the best converting ad sizes are…

  • 336×280 Large Rectangle

  • 300×250 Medium Rectangle

  • 160×600 Wide Skyscraper

In the Google Adsense help page on this subject, it also states…

As a rule of thumb, wider ad formats tend to outperform their taller counterparts, due to their reader-friendly format. Readers absorb information in thought units (that is, several words at a time). The wider format lets them comfortably read more text at a glance without having to skip a line and return to the left margin every few words as they would be forced to do with a narrower ad. The wider ad format also lessens the likelihood of readers leaving the ad unit altogether.

This advice, in my experience, has been generally sound. But it brings up a very important thing for blog authors. Blog tend to be skinny. Many blogs have skinny content areas where a 336 pixel would be really overwhelming. Blogs also have one or two sidebars which are also skinny. Having blogged on several subjects, I have found that wider content areas are very wise for a few different reasons. But let’s look at what I am talking about and break this down to be more clear. Your blog theme really defines what types of ads you can have on it.

Common Blog Formats pros and cons

One sidebar

This is a very common layout of a blog theme. This layout allows more room for the content and depending on the width of your content area, you can use most of the Adsense sizes on it.

What to watch out for. If your blog content area is 400 or less pixels, you are missing out. To give an example, my blog, the one you are reading has a content area of 500 pixels.

We will cover placement of ads in the next section, but as ar as sizes go, you need to know if you want sidebar ads or content ads.

I prefer ads in the content area. Depending on the subject of your blog you may find sidebar ads work better than content area ads, but in general I would say that ads within the content do better than ads in a sidebar. Therefore you want to have a content area that is wide enough to show the Google recommended ad sizes. My general recommendation is to have a content area of 500 pixels or more if you are going to be showing ads within your content. This will give you enough room to have your blog look pleasant even when using the 336×280 large ad size.

When you are placing ads in the content, make sure to format them to be to the left or right, I explain how to float Adsense ads left or right here.

Two Sidebars

The two side bar type blogs are often used where people are selling ads like the common 125×125 ads. This can be a good thing if you are making money from it, but I have not seen alot of two sidebar blogs that are good for Adsense. By having two sidebars, you are making your sidebars and your content area too skinny to have the recommended Adsense ad sizes. It is worth experimenting if this is right for you or not.

To test this out is rather simple luckily for blog authors. I recommend you look for a theme that is unlike your own. Find a theme or two that will allow you to try seperately both sidebar and content type ads. You will usually need a sidebar at least 300 pixels wide to try out Adsense in the sidebar (so you can use the 300×250 medium rectangle). For content, try for 500 pixels (so you can use the 336×280 large rectangle).

As a general rule, I have found bigger ads provide bigger results, but I have also found that sticking a big ad in a small place where it looks weird does not do well.

Adsense Placement

One of the great things about Adsense is you can change around where the ads are and it won’t mess up things like your ranking or SEO. The biggest change you can make is the position and placement of your ads.

Let’s look at the best practices about ad placement that come from the Google Adsense help pages and other places on the web…

The Google help page I linked to above is where the well known “heat map” is. This is what Google provides as a reference for where to place ads. That page states…

Certain locations tend to be more successful than others. This “heat map” illustrates the ideal placing on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.

To summarize what this is telling us…

1. Ads above the fold tend to work well

2. Ads to the left tend to work well when near the top

3. Ads within the content tend to work well.

You may or may not already know these things, but the main thing to remember here is that these recommendations are often correct. Not always, but most of the time they are true.

I did some specific testing using the heat map as a guide, let’s look at a couple of things I did and what happened…

1. Changing the sidebar from right to left

I have many sites where the sidebar is on the right. I have always preferred right hand sidebars but would changing it from the right to the left really make a difference in Adsense revenue? In this experiment the answer was yes. The click through ratio of ads on the left of this page went up dramatically, and I received more than twice the amount of income per month than I used to from the same page, with the same traffic.

The page was my virtual pets page on Gadzi.com.

This particular page made me around 100/150 dollars a month. Since making the change it is making me around 250/350 a dollars a month.

The time I spent on it was about 5 minutes, and it pretty much doubled my income. I simply put the sidebar to the left and kept everything the same about the page.

Upon testing this out, I realized that there were several places where I could make similar experiments.

2. Above the fold

The recommendation to have ads above the fold is one that makes sense, but I have seen so many people make their blogs/websites look like crap to try to do it, that I really wanted to figure out a way to make an ad prominent and above the fold but not completely ugly or intrusive. I decided to use SEOish (this blog) as a testing grounds and I used some of my articles which get constant traffic.

Many of my tutorials and posts get thousands of visitors a month even three years after I wrote them. I decided to use some of these pages. I put ads up on three different posts and I had one with an above the fold ad and one without, and the other I concentrated the ads towards the bottom of the post. Each of these ads were in the content area of the blog and were floated to the left or right.

Again the recommended Google Adsense placements panned out best…

- Above the fold did best as did ads within the content.

Now you may be wondering why I would be testing out the obvious. Here are my reasons…

  • I have never assumed the obvious path is the best path to take.

  • I like to test things

  • I found out that I had left alot of things undone, and I wanted to get all of my Adsense in order by naming my ads, having a list of them (and where they resided).

  • I have experienced results where the recommended placement did not do the best.

Are your ads doing as well as they could?

As I went back through my Adsense, I realized that I did not really know where my ads were. I have done so many things, and I hadn’t kept track very well. So I made a list of questions that would help me. Some of these are painfully obvious, but it is what I did. Here is the checklist…

1. Can you list all the websites you have Adsense on?

If yes continue.

If no make the list. Make it on a piece of paper or a spreadsheet, but have a list.

2. Do your ads have names?

If yes continue.

If no, name each of your ads. Name them like: “gadzi-300-sidebar” or: “seoish-abovefold-content-postname”

3. Have you read the Google help pages on Adsense optimization?

If yes continue.

If no, start here and watch the webinars, the videos and read the guidelines and optimization tips.

4. Are you spending time everyday optimizing your Adsense?

If yes continue.

If no, you may want to start. Just a few minutes a day can do wonders. As I said before there is no Adsense fairy, how well you will do using Adsense is entirely up to you. I think most people can probably increase their income significantly by just optimizing, even if they are having the same traffic levels.

If you can answer the above four questions with a “yes” then you will have a great deal of information when you log into your Adsense account. You will have trends, figures, and information that will help you optimize your ad income to the fullest. You can sort your ads by click through ratio, for example and see which ads are doing the best and start to understand why they are doing the best. The largest single step that has improved my income really is the naming of my ads. everything else fell into place after that for me because of the reports available in the Adsense interface.

Adsense for Search

The last thing I want to talk about is Adsense for search, also known as Google custom search. It is the Adsense product that has made me the most money. It is not well understood and not widely used. When it is used, it is not used well. I have used it for three or more years now and the oldest such use is one that I will highlight to help show you the potential of this product.

What is Adsense for search?

Google describes it as…

Allow your users to search your site or the web, and earn from ads on the search results pages. Creating a custom search engine is simple, and you can tune results and ads to your site’s content and audience.

It is most often used as a site search. People use it to provide their users with a way to search their own site.

The way money is made is by showing ads in the search results which you then get paid for.

Now I have used this product for years, and I do not use it much as a site search, but I do use it in other ways and I have made tens of  thousands of dollars doing so.

A great example of this is my “Ask Google” tool on feedthebot.com which I created as a way for me and other bloggers to search official Google resources. With Google custom search, you can define what sites the search engine you create searches. It could just search your own site, or it can search other sites as well.

In my case I got a list of official Google sources and had my search engine search all those sites. This was useful to me because sometimes it was hard to know what Google had actually said about a subject. For example let’s use “nofollow”, nofollow has been written about a million times, but what has Google actually aid about it? It was hard to determine but here are the results of a search for “nofollow” on my ask google tool. As that page shows there are many things Google has said about it and I often use that tool to learn things about Google when I need something from the horse’s mouth.

What is likely more interesting to you the reader though, is that I have been making over a thousand dollars a month from that page for years.

The click through rate of Adsense for search is very often around 25 percent.

Yes, 25 percent.

One in four or so of people using it tend to click an ad.

While no click through ratio is ever guaranteed, you will find the Adsense for search CTR to be much much higher than any other product.

This means that if you come up with a way to get people to search for something through your engine, you can make good money.

If there is one Adsense tool I recommend over all others, it is Adsense for search.

Any subject of which you have knowledge can be made into something that not only makes you money, but also makes the web a better place. I like that combo. Let’s say you have a child with an ailment and you have naturally researched that ailment very much. You probably know where the best information is. With Adsense for search, you can help others with your knowledge and also make money from it.

To do so you would create a custom search engine that searched all the great resources you know of, and not include all the crappy ones.

How you promote it is up to you, I will likely write more about it and provide a tutorial soon on the subject.

Until then, good luck and let me know of any tips you recommend.
