All About Laser Pointers And Their Use


A laser will go through the lense of the eye without having any effect, and the lense is what determines vision loss, so laser pointers are not likely to affect your vision. It takes a powerful laser, much more powerful than a pointer, to affect tissue so I don't think your immature friends have done you any harm.

It looks like current green and probably blue, laser diodes are made primarily by frequency doubling. Frequency doubling means that an infrared beam is pointed through a crystal which causes the frequency to double. If the IR beam is 1064 nm, the output beam will be 532 nm green or blue. The extra crystal is the cause of the extra price.

I don't know why normal green led technology isn't used for green pointers. Perhaps no one has perfected it in a small package yet. Anyway, laser diodes are made of materials that have an intrinsic "energy bandgap," which determines the wavelength of light emitted from the laser. Some materials may have a broader bandgap, but not enough to tune the laser over multiple colors.

Those laser pointers used in business presentations and school lectures--is there any danger to the eyes if they are pointed directly? And does the answer change depending upon whether one is talking about humans or dogs or cats, for example? No, those lasers are not dangerous to people or any large animals. Their power is firly low, and the beam is not very precise. The beam shape is a primary factor which makes similar-powered scientific lasers more dangerous. Well-shaped beams can focus to a much smaller spot than irregular beams.

All the same, you will see stars if you look at the beam directly. The brightness level is not too different from looking directly at the sun ,which is dangerous for other reasons, mainly unseen UV and IR light. There is a device called an optical parametric oscillator that can increase the wavelength, i.e. reduce the frequency of a laser. If you want to increase the frequency, i.e. reduce the wavelength of a laser, this can be achieved by using the laser to pump another laser, a dye laser for instance.

Would this device work with a laser pointer? I would like to add something to the end of it rather than mess around with the internal parts. You would use the laser pointer as a pump for the laser you would have to construct outside the laser pointer. No need to take the laser pointer apart, but you would need to build some sophisticated optics for this. Actually the green laser pointers that are commercially available use a red laser to pump another laser, this time green. So they are actually two lasers in one device.

I've been wanting to buy a blue laser pointer but found that the only ones with the technology to create them and who hold the patent are a select few so any such laser pointer would cost someone about $1,000. Green laser pointers cost about $100, and the common red ones cost maybe $20 at most. Why the extreme difference in price? What are these diodes and why are they so difficult to make?

You will have to wait a little while to buy a cheap blue laser pointer. The reason is quite simple. Red laser diodes were invented 15 years ago. Green laser diodes were invented 5 years ago, and blue laser diodes were invented last year. Similar to DVD writers, flat-screen TVs, and other new products, the price drops dramatically as time passes. Mainly, this is because one company owns a patent at first and can chjaarge whatever they want. When the patent expires, or alternate technology is invented, the price comes down.

There is nothing particularly difficult about making the diodes. Figuring out how to make them, which semiconductor materials, deposition, heat-sinking, is the hard part. But like I said some of the laser pointers can cause a little harm to your eyes, so if you want to get one or make one, make sure that you don't point it at anyones eyes. Even though you have friends that point there lasers in your eyes thinking that it is funny, which it isn't, to wrongs don't make a right. Just show them how more muture you are.

T.E.A. Co2 Lasers - Their Development and Application


Transversely Excited Atmospheric (T.E.A.) lasers have been in general industrial use for laser marking operations starting approximately in the early 1970s and late 1960's. The T.E.A. Co2 laser has been used extensively for laser marking and laser etching in many industries and on many different types of products. The T.E.A. Co2 laser has been used extensively in the dry food and pharmaceutical industries for laser marking and laser etching of buy dates, product expiration dates, lot numbers and serial numbers.

T.E.A. Co2 laser marking is achieved via the use of a mask or stencil. As the laser beam passes through the stencil, the outline of the mask or stencil is laser marked or laser etched onto the product. Changing the laser mark requires changing of the mask or stencil. In the past this was accomplished by an operator who manually changed the mask or stencil. This process continued until the introduction of automatic mask changers or time clocks several years after the introduction of the T.E.A. Co2 laser. Generally speaking, the use of T.E.A. Co2 mask lasers is limited to applications where the laser mark does not require frequent changes and the laser mark can be altered infrequently. Examples include, once at the end each shift, once a day, or after a long batch processing run of products. Automatic time clock modules are available but generally increment the time only every 15 or 30 minutes.

The T.E.A. Co2 laser requires the use of an external laser gas bottle generally consisting of the following components and approximate % combinations:

o Carbon dioxide (CO2) (around 10-20 %)

o Nitrogen (N2) (around 10-20%)

o Hydrogen (H2)

o Helium (He) (The remainder of the gas mixture)

The gas mixture flows though the laser by use of an internal fan assembly inside the laser head. The medium is combined with an electrical discharge that excites the atmosphere and generates the laser beam. This gas mixture is a consumable of the T.E.A Co2 laser marking or laser etching process. For spark gap driven T.E.A. Co2 lasers a dry air or nitrogen supply to the spark gap is also required.

T.E.A. Co2 lasers employed for laser marking and laser etching are generally air cooled except for the highest speed operations where water cooling may be required. T.E.A. Co2 lasers generally used in industrial laser marking and laser etching applications are capable of laser marking or laser etching up to 90,000 parts per hour. Generally T.E.A. Co2 lasers used in industrial laser marking or laser etching applications produce power levels from 2.0 joules to 5.5 joules depending on the internal configuration of the main capacitor size and rating coupled with the reflectivity of the laser font optic.

T.E.A. Co2 laser produce a very high peak power, up to 10x the peak power of continuous wave Co2 lasers and therefore are extremely useful for Co2 laser marking and laser etching of products that can be difficult for Co2 lasers such as some plastics and resins. With some materials, laser marking and laser etching with T.E.A. Co2 lasers will produce a visible color change to the product. Laser marking and laser etching sealed beam RF excited Co2 lasers will only produce an etch with no color change. The T.E.A. Co2 lasers can produce the change in color for some products along with a laser etch due to the high peak power produced by the T.E.A. Co2 laser pulse.

T.E.A. Co2 lasers have been used extensively up till now for laser marking and laser etching of discrete electronic components such as T0220's and SOT23's. The T.E.A. lasers produce a white or blue appearing laser mark on the component when the laser beam interacts with a 'laser friendly' ink on the surface of the component. In many of these applications the T.E.A. Co2 laser is coupled with a component tester. If the component passes the test a laser mark is applied. If the component fails the test the part is rejected from the line.

The newest generation of T.E.A. Co2 lasers has very high repetition rates and are used extensive in the Kapton industry for laser drilling purposes.

T.E.A. Co2 lasers generally operate in the infrared light spectrum at 10.6 and 9.4 micrometers. Generally rear optics in the laser cavity are 100% reflective to an extent causing self generated laser beams inside the electrode gap and laser head. The front optics in industrial applications vary between 40% to 70% reflective based on the material being Co2 laser marked, laser etched or laser drilled.

An important advantage of the T.E.A. Co2 laser is that laser light wavelength can be changed from 10.6 micrometers to 9.4 micrometers. This is achieved with the change of the font optic coating. The use of laser light at 9.4 micrometers is very important for Co2 laser marking of certain plastics such as PET or PETE and producing readable color changed Co2 laser marks on bottles. Generally speaking T.E.A. Co2 laser front optics in industrial applications are geranium coated though sometimes zinc selenide is used. Mirrors for turning the laser beam are gold coated and the laser beam profile can approach sizes of approximately 1" x 1" depending on the gap of the electrode set.

Billable Rights of SEOs and Their Clients




The SEO has a right to receive payment from the client for entire amount contracted. A contract is a contract is a contract. Don't try to weasel out of it.

The SEO has a right not to have to justify to the client payment due in terms of actual time spent on account unless payment is based on an hourly fee. Package priced contract fees are due regardless of time spent provided work outlined in the contract is performed.

The SEO has a right not to put the client's account on "hold" when requested. A contract is still a contract regardless of your financial situation, business restructuring, etc.

The SEO has a right to charge the client for services that fall outside the scope of the contract. If additional work is requested, expect to pay for it.

The SEO has a right to collect payment from the client on-time. Seriously, it's your job to make sure payments are submitted and received no later than the payment due date.
The SEO has a right to charge the client a late payment fee.

The SEO has a right to suspend the client's account if payment is not received in a timely manner. If you're not paying, don't expect work to continue until you're paid up.

The SEO has a right to undo all work performed for the client due to non-payment. If the SEO fulfills the contract but you're not paying, you're stealing time and money from the SEO you hired.

The SEO has a right to seek legal remedies for force payment from the client for services rendered. Still not paying? The courts will work it out.

The SEO has a right to cancel services and refund the client's money at any time. Don't be a problem client and you won't have to worry about getting fired by your SEO.

Billable Rights of the SEO Client



The client has a right to expect the SEO to fulfill contract in full. If you don't have time to work on the account, refund my money so I can hire someone who does.

The client has a right to know what will be done to his site by the SEO. Don't give me any nonsense about "proprietary strategies. You're messing with my site, I want to know what you're doing.

The client has a right to know the SEO tactics to be implemented externally. I'm paying you so tell me what you're doing for me.
The client has a right not to have their site penalized or thrown out of the search engines due to SEO tactics.

The client has a right to question SEO results and value of the work performed. If I don't see results I'll be asking you why. Maybe I just need you to show me how to see the results.
The client has a right to consult other SEO experts about the value of the work performed.

The client has a right to buy out of the SEO contract at any time. If I don't want your services anymore, let me pay for the full contract so I can move on.

The client has a right to maintain ownership of all work performed by the SEO. I'm not paying per click, so anything you do with my money is mine to keep.

The client has a right to expect SEO work performed to increase traffic and sales/conversions. If I'm not seeing more sales then I'm not getting my money's worth.

The client has a right to not have site hijacked, mutilated or destroyed by SEO. I expect quality work for my money.
